El Cotillo is a small fishing village on the western coast of Fuerteventura. Despite its small size, it has great value for both island residents and visitors: its seafaring flavour, its extensive pristine beaches on one side and the lagoons with crystal clear waters and white sand on the other, the flavour of the sea served in a wide variety of restaurants and especially, the sunset which nature gives us every day, make El Cotillo fascinate everyone who is lucky enough to know it.
Seductive sunsets
Every day, El Cotillo offers a magical show: every sunset on the Atlantic is a unique experience. The sky lights up in orange, yellow, pink and violet; the clouds become works of art, the sea splashes the shore incessantly creating a feast for the senses. The peace, serenity and sensuality of every sunset is unbeatable.
Beaches and beaches
Several beaches surround the village of El Cotillo, having been chosen for several times as some of the best beaches in Europe. To the north, towards the beautiful lighthouse in El Tostón (now a Traditional Fishing Museum, a must), small beaches of calm sea that form lakes thanks to the volcanic rocks surrounding them, very white sand and incredibly clear waters. This is the case of the beach of “La Concha”, “Los Lagos” and “Los Charcos”, among others.
To the south, the coastal scenery is very different but equally captivating: extensive pristine beaches (several km long), like “Piedra Playa”, wild waters and fine golden sand, suitable for surfing and other water sports.
The flavour of the sea brought to the table
El Cotillo has managed to keep its fishing character over the years and adapt to visitors without losing authenticity. Its ancient sea-going tradition is seen in every corner of the village, from the classic boats in the small port, to the old “Muellito”, which has become the gastronomic center of the area. It is common to see fishermen unloading the catch of the day, then served in the many restaurants that the town houses. “Cabrillas”, breams, Groupers, “chernes”, squid, octopus, “viejas” … are some of the delicacies offered by the coast of El Cotillo and cooks go to great lengths to prepare them in the freshest and most natural way, served with “papas arrugadas” and mojo, majorero cheese and other delicacies from the “majorera” land.
El Cotillo is one of those places in the world that make you fall in love, but it’s difficult to explain in words why. You just must see it and, mainly, feel it.
